Alberta Low Income Senior’s Benefit

It is the program which provides financial benefits to the eligible senior citizens in Alberta. The government of Alberta aids the senior citizens with low incomes in daily living, property tax, subsidized housing, medical help etc.

The senior needy citizens of Alberta are eligible to apply for it. It is a program that is jointly funded by the state and federal governments, and is managed by the states. A senior with an annual income of $22,700 or less and a senior couple with a combined annual income of $36,900 are eligible to apply. A person should be a recipient of one of the following federal benefits under the Old Age Security Act (Canada):

  • Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) (65 years or older); or
  • Allowance for Survivor (between 60-64 years old); or
  • Federal Allowance (between 60-64 years old).

Calculation of Amount

Assets and income are taken into account to determine the assistance amount. The cash benefit is based on the factors like annual income and pension.

How It Works

The ministry of finance Alberta sorts out all the applications and select the eligible ones. The maximum cash benefit from the Alberta Seniors Benefit program (when non-deductible income is $0) for a single senior living a nursing home is $8,880 annually. In the case of a married senior living in a nursing home (where one partner lives in a nursing home and the other lives in their home) the maximum cash benefit is $10,320 annually.
