Residents of the province whose family net income in the year 2008 is $40,000 or less and that family incurs costs so that they could heat their homes, are provided with Home Heating Rebate. Those households are not eligible for this home heating program if the heat is included in the rent.
A maximum rebate of $250 will be received by the eligible households if the family net income for 2008 is less than $35,000. This rebate is provided regardless of the energy source which has been purchased to heat the home. A maximum rebate of $500 will be received by the eligible households in Coastal Labrador communities. Assistance will be received by those households including individuals and families whose income is between $35,000 and $40,000. This rebate which is being provided will be reduced on a sliding scale. $100 is the minimum rebate for an eligible household.
Applying for Rebate
The eligible households which include individuals and families must provide with electricity or heating oil invoice in the name of the applicant or the applicant’s spouse, when they are going to apply for the rebate. Family net income will include all those incomes which are being generated by the member’s of the family. Only one member per household will be eligible to apply for the rebate.
Calculating Net Family Income
When calculating the family net income special circumstances will have to be considered. The income of the surviving spouse for the year will be used to determine eligibility when a spouse has dies. Family net income will be reduced by the amount which has paid to support the spouse in long term care facility if the spouse resides in a long term care facility. Family net income will be reduced by the amount of the payments in respect of the Adult Basic Education (ABE) or skills training program, if a person is enrolled in an ABE or skills training program. If the couple becomes divorced or legally separated then the individual’s income will be used to determine the eligibility.
